Update master/1.0 changelog, docs with all recent work

Description
The changelog (i.e. doc/changes/1.0.rst) for the master branch has not been updated with a lot of the new features I've added. Do so.
In addition, update the prose docs where necessary, and docstrings, though most changes do get docstring updates when they’re committed.
Left off about to tackle 93bcd99.
Marking this 0.9.1 because I want to ensure that all docs across both branches are fully updated with the new docs; if I wait, the gap between master and 0.9.x may grow even more and be that much more annoying to document.
EDIT: almost done with the first pass but I think there’s a number of spots where I've omitted the “versionadded” markers. Got it in some spots but not nearly enough. Take care of this before closing.

OK, all set now, all docs/changelogs/versionadded stuff should be up to date for the master/1.0 branch.
Now on to #111, which will need to make sure it pulls in all related changes from the ones listed here.
